Crocodile Prize: an initiative promoting PNG writers

There has been a noteworthy development in the PNG Literature scene that I would like to make a mention of here and that is the Crocodile Prize. This BRILLIANT literary competition was initiated by PNG Attitude and the Post Courier to promote PNG writers and their work.
Named after the first published novel by a PNG writer (Sir V. Serei Eri), this competition is open to all Papua New Guinea citizens within the three categories of short story, poetry, and journalism. According to the organisers there has been a steady stream of entrants since its launch last September.
If you have time, I urge you to pay a visit to the contributors’ page at Keith Jackson's PNG Attitude. The qualities of entries from our local writers are quite astounding and you will be impressed! Unlike works from overseas, the collective body of work from these Papua New Guinean writers will take you through the sights and sounds of places and settings that you are more familiar with.
One notable entrant in this competition is Jeffrey Febi. He's been my friend since Uni but I had no idea he could write so eloquently in the way he does with his collection of short stories and poems. Russell Soaba of the Soaba’s Storyboard fame has a more in-depth take on this particular writer in his post, ‘Our Prolific Jeffrey Febi’.
But it does not stop there. We have a poet in Icarus with his political sketches that reflect the all too familiar stories we hear so often. Tanya Zeriga-Alone takes you through a stormy night to see the world through the eyes of an old man as he takes his last breath on his death bed. Meanwhile from across the Bismarck Sea, Carolus Ketsimur takes us back in time to paint us a picture of the day when the blackbirders came to the village. Then theres Bernard Sinai, David Kitchnoge, Eva Kuson, Lapieh Landu and more.
I could go on but you get the picture. I suggest you go there to get a full dose of what I am referring to.
For you aspiring writers do take a minute to go there and download the entry forms and start entering.
Write, write, write and read, read, read!

World Bank to Work with Government of PNG to Improve Employment and Education Prospects for Papua New Guinea’s Youth

Press Release No:2011/285/EAP

WASHINGTON D.C., January 11, 2011—The World Bank Board of Directors today approved a US$17.9 million International Development Association credit for the Urban Youth Employment Project. The project will develop training and temporary employment opportunities for urban youth in Papua New Guinea to improve their long-term prospects. The Board also approved the US$5 million Flexible and Open Distance Education Project which will focus on increasing the number of out-of-school youth who complete recognized secondary diploma and certificate equivalency programs via distance learning.

Young people under the age of twenty account for almost half of Papua New Guinea’s total population and constitute a disproportionate part of the urban poor. In Port Moresby, the country’s capital, young people between the ages of 15 and 29 represent over one third of the population, compared to about a quarter nationally. It is estimated that the country’s youth population will grow by at least another 13 percent by 2015. A large proportion of out-of-school youth lack the publically recognized certification that would allow them to qualify for higher levels of education or to meet the minimum education requirements of some employers.

“By developing these projects the World Bank and Government of Papua New Guinea are making a major investment in not only the country’s young people but also its future,” said Ferid Belhaj, World Bank Country Director, Papua New Guinea. “Young people are powerful agents for change and I know that given opportunities to develop their skills, young Papua New Guineans will achieve remarkable things.”

The Urban Youth Employment Project aims to make a difference in the lives of 17,500 young people in Port Moresby, between the ages of 16 and 25. It will support the National Capital District Commission to secure job experience opportunities for youth in the public works sector. The project will give those in need a second chance to gain work experience and acquire skills that will help them realize their potential and prepare them for the workforce. This will help improve not just their employability, but their lives in general.

The Flexible and Open Distance Education Project will support the College for Flexible and Distance Education (FODE) to improve education outcomes. The project will increase opportunities for out-of-school youth to gain recognized qualifications and improve the performance and services of those students enrolled in FODE courses. It will focus on improving the quality of the equivalency curriculum and provincial support services; increase tutor-student contact hours in the provincial centers; introduce new technologies that would improve efficiencies and reduce costs; and improve the quality of student assessment.

Some Updates from Western Highlands Development Forum 2011

Elites of WHP,

1. This is an open invite to anyone of you based here in Port Moresby who is from, related to, associate with, or partner with Western Highlands Province that the Annual General Assembly/ Meeting (AGM) of the Western Highlands Development Forum 2011 will be held sometime in April and we wish to request a TEAM of volunteers to organize this event in partnership with the Interim Executive Committee of WHDF. If you, your spouse/wife, relative, friend, or workmate (who must be based in Port Moresby now) is interested, please forward his contact details to me immediately so that we can begin allocating functions and responsibilities. Anyone interested?

2. The Constitution of WHDF alongside the IPA Form 1 (Notice of Intention to Apply for Incorporation) has been approved on January 19th, 2011. Next week Tuesday or Thursday, WHDF will pay for advertorial of the approved-IPA notice in The National Newspaper. We wait 30 days from next week onwards. By end or March 2011, we will be able to get our IPA Certificate of Incorporation (as an Association) and also recieve our IRC Tax Code Number. We will then proceed to opening our bank account for WHDF. We need our elites working in ANZ, BSP, or Westpac to help WHDF open an operating account. Anyone willing to help us?

3. The WHDF online discussion site on FACEBOOK.com has grown to 310 members as of today. We hope that this number of membership will grow to a 1,000 soon as we spread the word of unity, consultation, cooperation, collaboration, and understanding amongst and between professional men and women of WHP in PNG and overseas for a public cause via WHDF. If you are on FACEBOOK, please share your thoughts on WHP - anything about development & challenges.

4. WHDF requests people who are skilled in creating websites to offer their services freely towards developing a comprehensive website for the WHDF. The URL which has yet to be registered may read: http://www.whdf.com. I have Melanie Kumbamong and Wesly Miriye willing to assist to creating this website. WHDF will provide the content and pictures. Anyone has some good pictures of WHP, please send them to me.

5. Some people who have volunteered to serve in the Board of Trustees of WHDF at the AGM include Alois Kopi Kuk, Dr. Fred Wurr, Dr. Michael Wilson (Pastor), Simon Korua, Margaret Parua, Tep Dami, Clivson Philip, Gabriel Pepson, Michael Makap, and others. George Leahy, Andrew Ogil, John Bori, Simon Kaiwi, Paias Tikili, Koi Trappe, and Max Kumbamong have been invited to consider sitting in the Board of Trustees of WHDF - we hope they will consider it at the AGM. At the AGM we will all be voting to choose these or other elites of WHP to head the WHDF in 2011 and onwards. Any other person interested thus far? Please send me an email and notify the WHDF committee soon.

6. WHDF will host a "Cocktail Get-Together" at Pondo Bar at Crown Plaza some weeks from now. Once finalized, the confirmed details will be send to you all. This will be an opportunity for elites of WHP in Port Moresby to come together, share time, enjoy finger food and some drinks (includes soft drinks) at the Pondo Bar/ Restaurant in Port Moresby on the basis of come-pay-as you go basis. It would be a nice time for ALL elites of WHP (including Jiwaka) to come together and rub shoulders with fellow country men and women. Will keep you posted shortly once finalized.

7. A feature news article has been written up by the WHDF Interim Executive Committee giving the public the benefit of the doubt by detailing what its all about. It should be run by the National Newspaper or Post Courier anytime next week. So please keep an eye out for it. A copy of the story will be emailed to all of you after publication by one of our dailies.

8. Once again, PLEASE be reminded that this WHDF set-up is NOT political, NOT interested in politics, DOESN'T promote anyone's political interest(s), WON'T associate with anything political now or ever again, and remains a neutral, independently-driven, think thank, and development vehicle and forum for ALL elites of WHP anywhere in the world to share whatever is good to build our province. Besides, WHDF will work with current politicians and government bureacracy to deliver to the 500,000 people of WHP regarding its original goals and objectives.

On this note, WHDF wish each of you are wonderful work week and God bless you all as we continue to believe in each other to collectively "Seeing the Bigger Picture Together!"
